Discover the Future of Energy with µÂÖÝÆË¿ËÔ´Âë at the Congressional Grid Innovation Expo
Explore µÂÖÝÆË¿ËÔ´Âë’s latest innovations presented at the Congressional Grid Innovation Expo.
µÂÖÝÆË¿ËÔ´Âë was one of sixteen exhibitors to present at the 2024 Congressional Grid Innovation Expo, co-hosted by The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) and the GridWise Alliance Sept. 18, 2024.
Ìý
The event was held in collaboration with the bipartisan House Grid Innovation Caucus, where organizations displayed innovative projects and emerging technology that’s being used to create a more resilient and reliable electric grid of the future.

Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) Technology
Presented by Rafik Eldaly and Brian Derr
Ìý
This project sits at the intersection of the transportation and energy sectors, where Delmarva Power is with the University of Delaware and PJM to explore V2G technology.
Ìý
Ìý
Delmarva Power is retrofitting four electric vehicles (EVs) from its fleet with bidirectional modular chargers, effectively transforming these vehicles into mobile inverters. This modification allows the EVs to be registered as Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) in alignment with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's Order 2222 (FERC 2222), which requires U.S. grid operators to open wholesale energy markets to DERs, including EVs.
Ìý
µÂÖÝÆË¿ËÔ´Âë is involved in multiple V2G projects, highlighting the company's efforts in integrating electric vehicles into the grid and addressing the challenges that come with it.

EV Smart Charge Management Program
Presented by Amanda Janaskie and Kristy Fleischmann Groncki
µÂÖÝÆË¿ËÔ´Âë’s Maryland Utilities – Baltimore Gas & Electric (BGE), Potomac Electric Power Company (Pepco), and Delmarva Power & Light (DPL) – are preparing for a significant increase in EVs with projections indicating that nearly two million EVs in our service areas will be demanding more electricity over the next decade. This surge presents potential challenges, as the existing grid infrastructure was not designed to accommodate widespread EV charging.
Ìý
Each Level 2 charger can effectively double a home's peak demand, and simultaneous charging across multiple homes could cause increased strain on the energy system, leading to accelerated wear and potential failures of distribution assets.
Ìý
To address these challenges, µÂÖÝÆË¿ËÔ´Âë launched its Smart Charge Management (SCM) pilot program, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. This program allows µÂÖÝÆË¿ËÔ´Âë to directly manage EV charging for participating residential customers.
Ìý
By utilizing advanced load-balancing algorithms, the SCM program creates customer-centric charging schedules that align with grid needs and will mitigate peak demand strain. The program has achieved a 92% compliance rate among enrolled customers, with 98% of EV charging now occurring during off-peak hours.
Ìý
µÂÖÝÆË¿ËÔ´Âë has also exceeded its initial enrollment targets and BGE has approval from the Maryland Public Service Commission to expand SCM into a full-scale program starting in 2025.
