Here’s How JDB's HBCU Employees Are Strengthening Our Business and Communities
Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) have been an important part of American history, standing as pillars of excellence in the educational community. HBCUs have produced many important leaders in our country, such as Martin Luther King Jr. and former Vice President Kamala Harris. HBCUs also account for producing 25% of Black graduates in STEM fields and 20% of all Black graduates. Not only do HBCUs provide a top-notch education they also provide safe communities for students to learn and feel supported.
JDB and the JDB Foundation are proud to have partnered with HBCU institutions in preparing the next generation of leaders at JDB and in the energy industry. That’s why we have provided over $15 million to HBCUs in an effort to create an impact in the local communities served. By collaborating with HBCUs, JDB can build the workforce of tomorrow while allowing students the opportunity to grow and thrive. By partnering with these schools, we are continuing to build a strong and qualified pipeline of talent allowing us to drive key business results.
JDB and the JDB foundation launched the HBCU Corporate Scholar Program to provide scholarship assistance, internship experiences and early-career readiness training to students attending HBCUs. Each student will receive $25,000 in need-based aid per year for four years. The program helps prepare HBCU students for careers at JDB and the energy industry. Participating students have the opportunity to intern with a variety of job functions including business administration, engineering, finance, information technology and supply chain management.
Many JDB employees who attended HBCUs have described the experience as instrumental in shaping their personal and professional lives. Hear from several JDB employees on how HBCUs have positively impacted them:

"Attending an HBCU meant everything to me. As a proud graduate of Tuskegee University, I was immediately immersed into the history and great impact that Booker T. Washington and George Washington Carver made in this world, and how I can make that same impact. It also meant finding and building a family of people who represented black excellence every day. There's a certain level of pride that graduates of HBCU's demonstrate and the beauty of it all, is that when we see each other out in our respective HBCU attire, there's an unwritten love and appreciation that we have for each other, because of our HBCU journey.”

“The Illustrious Tuskegee University molded me into the woman I am today. My HBCU taught me how to be confident and believe in myself. Being from Chicago going to Alabama taught me independence and survival skills. Being a part of numerous clubs and organizations brought me connections and mentors who help me grow and thrive not just in my professional career but in my everyday life. Tuskegee showed me love and taught me how to give love.”

“Morgan State University changed my life! It provided a safe space to develop as an individual, for the first time in my life I was able to walk in a room and my skin color wasn't the focal point. I learned that there is diversity within the black community, and I can be 100% authentic in my uniqueness.”

“Attending the Illustrious Hampton University, allowed me to be surrounded by people who understood my background and was able to place me on the right track for my future endeavors. I was able to be placed in rooms early in my college tenure that yielded me an internship at one of the Big4 Accounting firms for the summer of my sophomore year.”
